May The Force Be With You This Christmas
Dear Friends,
“May The Force Be With You This Christmas!!”
Much has been written about fate and free will. But what does it mean for you and for me? Are we - as the astrophysicists claim - mere puppets dangling on a string, subject to the faults and follies of blind fortune? Or do we - in fact - hold a casting vote in the unfolding drama of our lives? Let us first analyse the question, and then attempt a synthesis for further reflection.
Your natal horoscope undoubtedly sets the stage, shaping tendencies and potentials. Yet the planets, as most astrologers now agree, only impel: they do not compel. You are NOT as the postmodernist intelligentsia - aka ‘The High Priests of Science’ would have you believe - a finite, impotent puppet, totally subject to the control of a chaotic, blind and uncaring multiverse. Created simply by chance to lead a totally pointless existence. Born only to suffer and struggle to survive. But ultimately - irrevocably - to die and be forgotten.
I do not share such a fatalistic and depressing interpretation of The Meaning Of Life. Just the opposite in fact.
I am far more optimistic. I believe you are nothing less than the universe writ small: an eternal spirit created in the image of God, endowed with consciousness, self-awareness, and the priceless gift of free will. You are not the random spawn of carbon based molecules, but the deliberate creation of an ascendant consciousness aka God, the Universal Mind, call it what you will. Thus, you are free to choose. Free to walk the path of compassion, responsibility, and ethical living, or, to simply turn away. God created you but does not control your every thought and decision in an authoritative manner. He gifts you free will; the choice to ultimately do as you please. Consequently the final choice remains yours. But with power comes responsibility and consequences.
From the clay tablets of Mesopotamian scribes to the Zoroastrian astrologers who followed the Star of Bethlehem, humanity has sought to read the heavens for meaning. Science, too, has played its noble role: solving problems, illuminating mysteries, and making our lives more livable. We owe it much. Yet when science confronts the question of “what came before the Big Bang?” it falters. Groupthink prevails, and the possibility of a transcendent creative intellect is dismissed out of hand. At this point, philosophy, long established religious beliefs and practices - and New Age Spirituality - all step back into the equation. Plato’s cosmology, the ontological argument, the idea of a Universal Mind, all offer frameworks where science falls silent.
Only God - I argue - can precede the point of singularity, for only God can create Himself and thus transcend the law of cause and effect.
And so we return to Christmas. Was Jesus truly born on December 25th? Or was that date chosen to align with older pagan festivals? I and many other astrologers and academics suggest another possibility: 29th May, 7 BC. A date marked by rare planetary conjunctions that may have inspired the Magi’s journey. Whether it's December or May, the deeper truth remains: Christmas is not about the calendar but about the eternal message, hope, renewal, and the birth of divine light into the world.
So what is the verdict? Fate and free will are not enemies but partners. The stars may sketch the outlines, but your choices fill in the colours. Science may explain the mechanics, but philosophy and faith illuminate the meaning. This Christmas remember: you are not a puppet dangling on a string, subject only to the influence of blind chance. You are a conscious being with purpose, dignity, and destiny. You are the universe come alive - the Universe writ small - a spark of the eternal flame. An eternal spiritual entity currently enduring the temporary trials and tribulations of being human.
In short: you are more than the sum total of your parts!!
Therefore, walk forward with courage, compassion, and joy. And may the Force - the divine, the universal, the eternal - be with you this Christmas and always.
Well folks, I think that’s me all written out for this letter. So until I write again next year “God Bless and Protect each and every one of you!”
Bye bye.
